About Robert Ariail
Robert Ariail has won numerous awards for his work, most
recently the Ranan Lurie United Nations Political Cartoon Award in
December 2009. Ariail became the first American to win first prize in
the award's 10-year history.
Ariail is also a recipient of the Overseas Press Club of
America's 1997 Thomas Nast Award for cartoons on foreign affairs. He was
awarded the Society of Professional Journalists' Green Eyeshade Award
in 2002, 1997 and 1991, and was a runner up each year from 1992-1995. He
also won the 1992 National Society of Professional Journalists Award
and the 1990 National Headliner Award, and was a runner up for the 1999
Overseas Press Club Award. Ariail was a finalist for Pulitzer Prize in
1995 and 2000.
In 1993, he was awarded the Ambrose G. Hampton Award for
outstanding performance, an honor bestowed annually to employees of The
State (Columbia, SC), where Ariail was the staff cartoonist for 25
years. Ariail has produced two best-selling collections of his work,
Ariail View (1990) and Ariail Attack (1992). His most recent cartoon
collection, riail!!!: More Cartoons by Robert Ariail, was published by
The State in 2001.
