COLUMBIA, SC - September 18, 2012 - Janice Park Rivers has established a new QuickJobs scholarship fund in the Midlands Technical College Foundation in memory of her son, Blair Park Rivers. This new fund will be used to award up to 10 awards in support of the college’s QuickJobs programs.

The Blair Park Rivers QuickJobs Scholarship Fund will provide scholarship support in the college’s Corporate and Continuing Education division for students in the Cardiac Care Technician, Certified Nursing Assistant, and Phlebotomist QuickJobs programs.

“I made this pledge in memory of my son Blair, who understood that he needed to learn a specific skill that could be his career, something he would enjoy rather than pursuing a four-year degree and waiting to see where that led,” said Ms. Rivers in making her gift. “I want to help people find meaningful, joyous work that provides a good lifestyle and pride in what they do, and I believe the QuickJobs program provided by the college is a perfect fit.”

“We are grateful to Ms. Rivers for providing this generous contribution to the MTC Foundation,” said Tim Nelson, Associate Vice President for Development. “Gifts like these from individuals in our community help people get jobs that will provide a livable wage to support themselves and their families.”

QuickJobs at Midlands Technical College (MTC) was developed in response to this growing challenge of jobs without people and people without jobs. As technology continues to impact the skills needed for today’s high-growth, high-demand jobs, QuickJobs assists displaced workers by retooling their skills for the new economy. Training programs range from three weeks to 15 months at an average cost of $2,500 and cover careers in business, healthcare, computer technology, manufacturing and skilled crafts.

Since the launch of the QuickJobs Scholarship Program in the spring of 2010, nearly $300,000 has been contributed to the MTC Foundation by individuals and local business partners.
